The Rio Grande Valley Chapter connects blind South-Texans in Starr County, Hidalgo County, Willacy County and Cameron County. The RGV Chapter is the only NFB chapter to hold meetings in Spanish with English translations as needed. Many members bring their family to the monthly meetings and assist others by coordinating carpools. The membership reaches out to the community by presenting information about blindness at health fairs across the RGV, planning White Cane Safety Day activities during Meet the Blind Month, supporting the Silver Bells Program and hosting an NFB BELL Program to teach blind children alternative non-visual skills. Students in the chapter collaborate with the University of Texas at Brownsville, including selling international food to support the BELL Program and coordinating an accessible art museum with interactive mixed-media pieces and performances. The chapter offers lessons twice monthly in various areas; possible topics include braille, assistive technology, orientation and mobility, art and more.
Chapter meetings are held the third Saturday of the month at various locations to accommodate members in all parts of the RGV area. Family members and anyone interested in learning more about the NFBTX are invited to join in the public meetings. For information about upcoming chapter meetings, contact Macarena Pena, chapter president, at email@example.com or Daniel Martinez, chapter vice president, at firstname.lastname@example.org or (956)-545-6402. The chapter also publishes articles and news of interest to members through its Newsline channel. Check out the RGV Chapter on Facebook and WhatsApp Messenger.
