The Rio Grande Valley Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind of Texas connects blind South Texans and visitors from Matamoros and Reynosa, Mexico. It is the only NFB chapter in Texas to hold meetings in Spanish with English interpretation services as needed. Many members bring their family to the monthly meetings and assist others by coordinating carpools.
The Rio Grande Valley Chapter reaches out to the community through different state and national programs:
● NFB Braille Enrichment for Literacy and Learning (BELL) Academy
● NFB-NEWSLINE® Texas Silver Bells Senior Training
● Programas de Cambiando Vidas
● NFB-NEWSLINE® outreach and training events
● NFB of Texas Career Mentoring Program
● Meet the Blind Month Events
● Resource Fairs
● Instructional Centers
The Rio Grande Valley Chapter meets every 3rd Saturday of the month from 12 to 3 PM. The meetings are held at 306 S. 15th St. McAllen, TX 78501. From 12-2pm the chapter holds its general meeting. From 2-3pm the chapter has instructional centers in braille literacy, adaptive technology, travel, independent living, and arts and crafts.
