The National Federation of the Blind of Texas Youth Programs help blind kids, teens and young adults develop the alternative, nonvisual skills and positive attitudes necessary to live the lives they want. Through the CAREER (Changing Attitudes Regarding Education, Employment & Rehabilitation) Mentoring Program, the National Federation of the Blind of Texas helps blind youth and young adults build relationships with independent, successful blind Texans and learn that blindness need not be a tragedy.
Each protégé is carefully matched with a program and a mentor that best meets their individual needs. Career interests, post-secondary academic plans and social backgrounds are considered when pairing mentors and protégés. Organized team-building and community-based activities provide valuable experience for participants.
We know the employment and education of the blind should not be difficult to achieve. Our youth programs address these issues by providing networking opportunities between blind peers, allowing for role-modeling of successful blind professionals and introducing necessary tools such as cane travel, assistive technology, activities of daily living, and braille. Youth program activities range from group outings to one-on-one events between mentors and protégés. Hiking, water skiing, barbecue picnics, roundtable discussions about blindness, historical tours, visits to college campuses, concerts and an array of other activities will allow mentors to show protégés how blind people utilize alternative techniques to enjoy all aspects of life independently, happily and successfully.
We have lots of great mentors, but we are always looking for blind adults who wish to give back to our community by helping a young person grow and mature. If you are blind and want to help, use the link below to apply to become a mentor.
If you are a young person who would like to participate in a program that will challenge you to live the life you want, please complete the appropriate application below. We accept young people between the ages of 14 and 22 into this program.
