Time: 1 to 3 PM
Location: Brownsville, Texas (RSVP with Daniel Martinez to obtain the address)
Who: NFB of Texas CLASS Program Students

The CLASS Program is exploring how blind people use sound acoustics to travel independently. Bring your long white cane and let’s tap our way to independence!

What is the science of acoustics?

Acoustics is the branch of physics concerned with the study of sound, its production, transmission, and effects. It encompasses various phenomena related to sound waves, including how they propagate through different mediums, how they interact with objects and environments, and how they are perceived by humans.

Acoustics has applications in a wide range of fields, including music, engineering, architecture, medicine, and communication technology. It is instrumental in designing concert halls, optimizing the performance of musical instruments, developing soundproofing materials, creating medical imaging techniques like ultrasound, and improving the quality of audio communication systems, such as microphones and speakers.

Come find out how blind people use acoustics to explore their environment, how instruments create sound, and conduct some fun experiments to change the sounds and acoustics around you.
