August 23, 2024

Our August Person to Know is Juan Carlos Munoz, the Second Vice President of the Houston Chapter. Juan joined the NFB in 2008 after being approached about a mentoring program while he was attending the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Austin. He liked what he heard and since then, he has been President of the Texas Association of Blind Students and a member of the Board of Community Service Division of the NFB. He has attended nine national conventions and looks forward to the state convention in Dallas this year.

A Houston native, Juan is the youngest of four; he has an older brother and two older sisters. He was born with a condition called Leber Congenital Amaurosis, or LCA. He became completely blind at the age of 12. Juan is a white cane user and uses a braille reader for work.

Juan attended Houston Public Schools and received lots of support, for which he feels very fortunate. He then earned some college credits before entering the workforce. He has worked for the Harris Health System as a medical interpreter for the past seven years.

Juan loves cheese and chocolate but tries to eat healthy. He has played the drums for 22 years. He is a big Houston Astros fan, and also plays beep baseball for the Houston Hurricanes.

Thanks to the NFB, Juan has learned to live independently and advocate for himself. He gains motivation from seeing the achievements of his fellow NFB members. “Keep taking everything a day at a time,” Juan tells us. “Keep moving forward.”
