2025 NFBTX Scholarship Program Now Accepting Applications

Each year, the National Federation of the Blind of Texas offers scholarships to some of the best and brightest blind students in Texas. This year, we are offering four scholarships: three worth $2,000 each and one worth $3,000. The scholarships are based on merit, and if you or someone you know meets the eligibility criteria, we encourage you to apply. To be eligible, you must be:

  • legally blind - You have a visual acuity of 20/200 or worse in your better eye with the best correction or a visual field of 20 degrees or less. So, if you are legally blind without glasses but your vision can be corrected to 20/20 with glasses, you are not eligible. If you are only legally blind in one eye, you are not eligible. This requirement sometimes causes confusion. If you have any questions, call our office before completing the application. Or, write to scholarships@nfbtx.org for answers.
  •  a Texas resident - You must reside in Texas at the time you apply. Students residing outside the state are not eligible, even if they are attending online classes at a Texas school. People residing in Texas but attending online classes outside the state are eligible. The bottom line is that you must live in Texas to be considered for an NFBTX scholarship.
  • planning to attend school full-time in the fall of 2025 - You must be planning to attend classes at a college, university, or technical school full-time. That may mean different things in different settings. Generally, undergraduate students must be taking at least twelve (12) semester hours to be considered full-time. Graduate programs may have different requirements. The same is true for some technical schools. The committee will contact the applicant if there are questions about their status. There is one exception to the rule regarding full-time attendance. The committee may, in its discretion, grant a scholarship to a student who is working full-time and attending school part-time.

The deadline for applying is August 1, 2025. Applicants need not be members of the Federation to be selected. We prefer electronic submission of all required documents. However, if an applicant needs to send a printed document they should mail it to us at the address in my signature block and make it to the attention of the NFBTX Scholarship Committee.
